Requirements

  • A diploma or degree in nursing, or equivalent qualification, allowing registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse in psychiatry. You must also have a diploma or degree in Nursing Administration or Health Service Management accredited by SANC.
  • A post-basic qualification of at least one year in Advanced Psychiatric Nursing Science, or a Postgraduate Mental Health qualification accredited by SANC at diploma or degree level.
  • Proof of current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse.
  • A minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in general nursing.
  • At least 6 years of that experience must be after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty.
  • At least 3 years of that experience must be at a Psychiatric Nursing Management level.
  • Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and relevant legal frameworks, including the Nursing Act, Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Patient Rights Charter, Batho Pele principles, Public Service Regulations, Labour Relations Act, Disciplinary Code and Procedure, Grievance Procedure, Nursing Strategy, Ideal Hospital framework, Mental Health Care Act No. 17 of 2002, Criminal Procedure Act No. 51 of 1977, and National Nursing Strategy 2020/21 – 2025/26.
  • Skills: Leadership, organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities within public sector and institutional policies. Interpersonal skills, including public relations, negotiation, conflict handling, and counseling. Financial and budgetary knowledge for resources under management. Understanding of procedures and policies for nursing care. Basic computer literacy.
  • Personal qualities: Responsive, proactive, professional, accurate, flexible, initiative-taking, cooperative, team player, supportive, and assertive.

Duties

  • Coordinate optimal, holistic specialized nursing care within set standards and professional/legal frameworks. Manage the use and supervision of resources effectively. Coordinate training and research.
  • Provide support to Nursing Services and act as Nursing Manager when delegated.
  • Maintain professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development. Ensure quality nursing service management. Coordinate general and specialized nursing care.
  • Manage resources and support nursing services. Mentor operational managers and maintain professional standards.
  • Handle performance management and development system (PMDS) for subordinates. Ensure effective communication, optimal staff utilization, and conflict resolution.
  • Follow Department of Health policies, develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintain regulated norms and standards. Manage human resources, ensure skills development, and deliver quality care efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Lead the team in monitoring, preventing, and managing patient safety incidents. Coordinate training and research. Maintain accurate midnight statistics. Support Department of Health objectives for quality patient care at night.
  • Compile evidence-based reports for patient care continuity and handovers. Implement disciplinary and corrective measures. Maintain evidence-based practice.
  • Manage patient complaints and resolve them for better care. Conduct random patient satisfaction surveys. Perform nursing records audits to ensure safe, evidence-based care. Implement hospital contingency plans and report incidents.
  • Coordinate and monitor non-clinical operations impacting patient care at night. Oversee patient flow from emergency units and provide directives for seamless care. Resolve complaints promptly and keep records. Follow guidelines for complaints and patient safety.
