Assistant Information Specialist

Job Purpose:

To develop and manage collections of recorded materials and deliver information services to users. Library collections can include books, journals, newspapers, pamphlets, manuscripts, maps, films, sound recordings, microfilms, CD-ROMs, e-books, e-journals, and databases. The role also supports research and research practices for both students and online students. It promotes intellectual integrity and ethical scholarship.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in running the circulation desk, including issuing, renewing, and returning book loans.
  • Handle newspapers daily, including scanning and clippings.
  • Manage journals daily.
  • Shelve books and read shelves daily.
  • Check that all equipment, such as computers, printers, and copiers, is functional.
  • Help update notice boards.
  • Assist in preparing and mounting displays in the Information Centre.
  • Help students use computers.
  • Conduct information literacy workshops for students.
  • Assist students with OPAC searches.
  • Ensure the Information Centre is always neat and professional.
  • Provide clerical support to the Information Specialist, such as photocopying handouts, helping during workshops, and checking subject guides and database worksheets.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and required.

Minimum Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in library and information science.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of working experience in a relevant field, preferably in an academic Information Centre.
