Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering (must have a technical undergraduate degree); and a Master’s degree in science, engineering, business (such as an MBA) or a related field; and a qualification (or clear experience) in financial management.

Minimum Experience (Type and Years)

  • At least eight (8) years of experience in technology transfer in a university setting, or at a science council or similar organization. At least three (3) years must be in a line management role.
  • Strong skills in managing people, with the ability to motivate, guide, and develop a team with diverse skills, such as IP management, commercialization/innovation, new venture creation, and innovation/investment funding.
  • Understanding of the research process and innovation in a university environment, including how to advance a product or service through technology readiness levels.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws for technology transfer (such as exchange control and the Biodiversity Act), and especially the practical application of the IP Rights from Publicly Financed R&D Act.
  • Experience and a strong track record in technology transfer and commercialization, with knowledge of intellectual property protection and management, licensing, and technology transfer in academic or industry settings.
  • Proven ability to manage and negotiate intellectual property agreements and deals between universities, industry, and government.
  • Strong communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Excellent collaboration skills to work with inventors, industry, government organizations, investors, and entrepreneurs.
  • Knowledge of company incorporation requirements.
  • Experience in creating and incorporating university start-up companies.
