This Legal Internship Programme offers a structured professional training and work experience opportunity. It aims to provide high-quality training and practical exposure in the legal and municipal environment. The programme follows a logical sequence that builds on the skills and knowledge gained during university studies. It is designed specifically for unemployed graduates who hold an LLB degree.

Key Requirements:

Main Responsibilities (Key Performance Areas):

The successful intern will assist the Head of Legal and Compliance in providing effective and efficient support. This includes ensuring the municipality stays updated on new legal directives and offering verbal and written legal opinions on various matters. Key duties will involve:

  • Perusing, preparing, and drafting various legal documents, such as letters, contracts, and legal opinions.
  • Conducting thorough research on relevant laws, regulations, and legal articles.
  • Investigating cases and gathering necessary information.
  • Organizing and maintaining documents in both paper and electronic filing systems.
  • Assisting with the drafting of new policies and procedures, as well as amending existing ones.

Throughout the internship, the intern will gain hands-on experience in a dynamic municipal setting, contributing to legal compliance and support while developing professional skills under guidance.

Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme

This Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme is a structured professional training and work experience initiative. It focuses on delivering high-quality training and practical exposure in all aspects of a Municipal Budget and Treasury Office. The programme is governed by the Municipal Finance Management Act and aligns with its underlying reforms. It builds progressively on the skills and competencies acquired during university education and culminates, where applicable, in a qualification in Municipal Finance Management that complies with the Municipal Minimum Competency Regulations. This opportunity is targeted at unemployed graduates in relevant fields.

Key Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma with majors in Accounting, Economics, or Finance.
  • Additional focus areas may include risk management, auditing, and taxation.
  • Interns will sign an internship agreement in addition to the employment contract, committing to full participation in educational components, workplace assignments, and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Excellent prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks at once.
  • Capacity to thrive in a high-pressure environment with tight deadlines.

Main Responsibilities (Key Performance Areas):

The intern will support the preparation of budgets and financial statements by working with system information, performing calculations, making adjustments to entries, reconciling, and consolidating accounting data. They will prepare and submit schedules, collate information for reporting, and ensure all submissions meet timelines and requirements. Specific duties include:

  • Applying instructions to access system data and perform necessary financial calculations and adjustments.
  • Reconciling and consolidating transactional information, cross-checking totals and entries for accuracy.
  • Submitting reconciled data for verification and processing adjustments or journals to balance income and expenditure ledgers.
  • Checking expenditure and income details on ledger reports, extracting queries, and referring them to supervisors.
  • Updating fields in the consolidated budget information system and using formulas to calculate trends in expenditure and income.
  • Making adjustments based on feedback from superiors.
  • Updating income and expenditure records against budgetary provisions and ensuring accurate posting of transactions.

This role will provide comprehensive exposure to municipal financial processes, helping the intern develop expertise in budget management, treasury operations, and compliance with financial regulations.
