About Magalies Water

Magalies Water Board was established in 1969 under Government Notice 234 of 1969. It was initially created to supply water to the platinum mines in the Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. Over the years, Magalies Water has grown to provide essential water services to industries, communities, and municipalities. In 1996, it expanded its operations to include retail water supply to select local municipalities and the City of Tshwane Metropolitan.

In 1999, following negotiations with Rand Water, the company upgraded the Vaalkop Water Treatment Works to meet the increasing demand in the Rustenburg region. By 2003, Magalies Water made a strategic decision to engage in retail water operations and maintenance, aligning with the Municipal Structures Act and Municipal Systems Act. Its mandate is further supported by Sections 29 and 30 of the Water Services Act (Act 108 of 1997).

As a Water Board, Magalies Water’s primary purpose is to:

  • Provide water services to other water services institutions within its service area (Section 29). This includes sourcing raw water from dams, mining sources, and other intermediaries.
  • Undertake additional activities that do not compromise its core functions or those of other water services providers (Section 30). These may include:
    • Offering management services, training, and support to water services institutions to foster cooperation.
    • Supplying untreated or non-potable water to end-users for non-household purposes.
    • Providing catchment management services on behalf of responsible authorities.
    • Supplying water directly for industrial use, accepting industrial effluent, and acting as a provider for industrial consumers, with appropriate approvals.
    • Engaging in joint ventures with water services authorities.
    • Performing water conservation functions to promote sustainability.

Magalies Water operates across a vast service area of 42,000 km², covering parts of North West, Limpopo, and Gauteng provinces. This area is connected to the major catchments of the Crocodile and Pienaars Rivers.

Transformation and Growth

In 1983, the board renamed the organization from Vaalkop Water Board to Magalies Water Board, marking a significant step in its evolution and strategic development.
