About the Bursary Provider – Gert-Johan Coetzee

Gert-Johan Coetzee, a renowned South African celebrity fashion designer, has made a name for himself in the fashion industry, dressing many international and local celebrities for red-carpet events. In 2009, he partnered with the North West School of Design (NWSD) to award to deserving students, with the aim of growing the South African fashion industry and financially assisting students who wish to make a name for themselves within the fashion industry.

About the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary Programme – Fields Covered

Gert-Johan Coetzee is inviting students to apply for the Gert-Johan Coetzee Fashion Bursary, which will be awarded for studies at the North West School of Design, to pursue Fashion Design studies for 3 years. The bursary will cover tuition fees, a laptop, and a Bernina sewing machine. The bursary will not provide cover for personal stationery, personal laptop, accommodation, and meals, which will be for the students’ own account.

Eligibility Requirements for the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary

To be considered for the bursary, applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria:

Age Must be 18 years or older
Citizenship Must be a South African citizen
Must be currently in Matric or have completed Matric with a Diploma exemption
Intent Must intend on studying full-time towards a 3-year Fashion Design course at the North West School of Design in Klerksdorp
Start Date Must be able to start studies on 31 January 2025
Commitment Must be willing to commit to 3 years of study
Language Must be fluent in English (read, write, and speak)
Course Prospectus Must read the NWSD course prospectus (.pdf)

How to Apply for the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary

To apply for the bursary, applicants must follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursary Application 2025 on the NWSD website.
  2. Record and upload a video to social media, by following these instructions:
    • Record a video of yourself dressed in your favorite style.
    • Introduce yourself, stating your name and where you are from.
    • Describe your style and where your clothes are from.
    • Ensure the video is a maximum of 1 minute long.
  3. Share your video on social media:
    • Upload your video to TikTok and Instagram.
