
Diesel Mechanic (6-Month Contract)
Location: Robben Island Museum, Cape Town
Compensation: R557,726.51 – R615,823.02 TCTC per annum

Position Overview
The Robben Island Museum (RIM) Operations Department seeks a qualified Diesel Mechanic for vehicle maintenance operations. This contract position requires technical expertise in maintaining and repairing various diesel-powered vehicles and equipment critical to island operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive maintenance on fleet vehicles (VW/Volvo buses, Hino trucks, JCB equipment, cranes)
- Diagnose and repair engine, transmission, and hydraulic system issues
- Conduct electrical system troubleshooting and welding repairs
- Execute engine overhauls including piston, bearing, and valve replacements
- Implement preventative maintenance programs adhering to manufacturer specifications
- Maintain detailed service records and inventory management
- Conduct daily vehicle inspections and safety checks with drivers
- Provide emergency repair services including after-hours callouts
Qualification Requirements
- Red Seal Trade Test Certification (Diesel Mechanic)
- Valid EC1/EC Driver’s License
- 3+ years’ experience with heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment
- Proficiency in diagnostic software and welding techniques
- Comprehensive understanding of fleet maintenance protocols
