National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) provides government-funded study bursaries to South African students from households earning R350,000 or less annually. Applications open 20 September 2024 and close 31 January 2025 for studies at public universities or TVET colleges.

Eligible candidates must be South African citizens with admission from a public institution. Returning students need a 60% average pass mark. The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation, transport costs, study materials, and monthly living allowances.

NSFAS prioritizes students from low-income families who meet academic requirements. Applicants must submit proof of household income through the NSFAS online portal. Successful candidates receive funding for the full duration of their qualification if they maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme funds teaching qualifications to address critical teacher shortages in South Africa. Open to citizens under 30 years old, it accepts applications from 1 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 for Bachelor of Education (BEd) or Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programmes.

Priority goes to students specializing in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Indigenous Languages teaching. The bursary covers tuition, accommodation, study materials, and a monthly allowance. Recipients must teach at a public school for the same number of years they received funding.

Applicants need provisional admission to an approved education programme. Selection considers academic ability and commitment to teaching in high-demand subjects. Failed courses must be repeated at the student’s own expense.

Both bursaries require annual renewal applications. Students should submit documents early and check application portals regularly for updates. Late submissions will not be considered.
