The Agricultural Research Council – Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) is looking for a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated individual to join our team in this important role at our Onderstepoort facility in Pretoria.

Job Description

In this position, you will play a key part in advancing veterinary research through hands-on and supportive tasks. Your main responsibilities will include:

• Performing molecular diagnostics to support ongoing research and testing needs.
• Assisting in the development of diagnostic assays for both molecular and serological tests, contributing to innovative solutions in veterinary science.
• Managing and maintaining laboratory equipment and research materials to ensure smooth operations and accurate results.
• Helping to build capacity within the division by training junior staff and sharing knowledge effectively.
• Identifying personal learning opportunities to grow your skills and stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.

Job Requirements

To succeed in this role, you should meet the following qualifications and experience:

• A BSc (Honours) or MSc degree in Biological Sciences, or an MTech in Veterinary Technology.
• At least three (3) years of relevant experience after obtaining your degree.
• Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinary Technologist.
• Proof of at least one peer-reviewed publication in a relevant field.

Job Description

As a Researcher in Pest Control, you will lead and contribute to important projects aimed at protecting crops from pests. Your role will cover several key areas:

Project Management & Coordination

You will be responsible for overseeing research projects across the institute, including:

• Planning and starting new research initiatives.
• Managing equipment and materials needed for the projects.
• Supervising project team members and human resources.
• Handling project finances to stay within budget.
• Identifying risks and creating plans to address them.
• Monitoring progress, evaluating results, reporting on outcomes, and closing out projects successfully.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

• A PhD in Entomology, Nematology, Crop Protection, or a related discipline.
• At least three (3) years of post-MSc research experience in pest control for crops.
• 3 to 5 peer-reviewed publications in the relevant field as author or co-author.
• Proven ability to secure funding from external sources for research projects.
• Experience with pests affecting vegetable or industrial crops is a plus.
• Registration with a recognized scientific or professional body is preferred.
• An NRF rating is a strong advantage.
• A valid driver’s license.
