About the Position

The CSIR is a leading research organisation that develops and promotes technologies to support South Africa’s socio‑economic growth. We are looking for a Master’s student to join our Technology for Special Operations (TSO) Impact Area within the Defence and Security Cluster. The role involves research and development of technologies for airborne and landward special operations.

Research Areas

  • Design and development of embedded systems
  • Control systems development

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions

  • Signal and image processing
  • Other defence and security related topics

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare a research proposal approved by CSIR and the university.
  • Write a literature review of the current state‑of‑the‑art.
  • Conduct original research to solve identified problems.
  • Publish peer‑reviewed papers based on the Master’s research.
  • Compile and defend the Master’s dissertation.
  • Contribute to additional project activities (up to 20% of total time).

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering or a related field.
  • Registered for a Master’s qualification at a South African university (to be agreed with CSIR).
  • Strong background in embedded systems, AI, software development, or control systems.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, and Linux.
  • Experience working with diverse data sets and analytical tools.
  • Knowledge of software development for experimentation and prototyping.
  • Understanding of the scientific method: experiment design, execution, analysis, and dissemination.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Cover letter (max two pages) outlining research interests, problem statement, objectives, and expected impact.
  • Certified copies of latest academic results or transcript.
  • Certified copies of tertiary qualifications.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Proof of university registration or a confirmation letter from the university supervisor (if applicable).
  • Recommendation letter (advantageous).
