Plennegy Research: Research Field Assistant

Responsibilities:

Seed & Planting Preparation

  • Collect seed from the seed store and arrange it as per planting lists.
  • Number the seed correctly for production, breeding, and screening programs.
  • Fill trays correctly with growing medium.
  • Supervise the labeling of trays.
  • Supervise the sowing of seeds.
  • Ensure optimal conditions for germination.
  • Organize treatment of trays and seedlings before planting.

Field & Infrastructure Management

  • Measure out land space for planting.
  • Prepare land and beds with irrigation.
  • Build tunnels and onion cages.
  • Assist with planting and ensure proper documentation.
  • Monitor and control weeds during plant growth.
  • Assist with fertilization and irrigation.
  • Supervise trellising and plant maintenance.

Plant Health & Protection

  • Scout and report insect infestations and disease symptoms in seedlings.
  • Report plant health issues promptly to breeders or farm manager.
  • Organize treatment of affected seedlings and trays.
  • Scout for insect infestations during the plant growth cycle.
  • Monitor and report overall plant health.
  • Remove off-type plants (derouging).

Supervision & Coordination

  • Assist farm manager, breeders, and production department with daily operations.
  • Supervise correct labeling, sowing, and planting processes.
  • Ensure research and production activities run efficiently.
  • Coordinate grow-out evaluations, disease screening trials, and trials at different locations.

Outreach & Demonstration

  • Assist with Farmers’ Day demonstration blocks.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 National Senior Certificate (essential).
  • Tertiary qualification (preferential).
  • Driver’s License Code 8.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a research supervisor.
