Job Description

Purpose of the Role

Projects will include, but are not limited to:

  • Large custom client deployments, from colocation setups to full data center hall builds.
  • Assisting the site Project Manager with all project-related tasks.
  • Handling safe switching, energization, de-energization, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and access to live or energized rooms during construction and fit-out.
  • Participating in inspections and approvals for energization, and enforcing rules and regulations, including national ones, Teraco procedures, and site-specific electrical safety guidelines.
  • The role includes legal responsibility and a GMR 2.7 appointment under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and regulations.

Objectives

Main Functions of the Job

The Energy Marshall will:

  • Compile and maintain site-specific procedures for energization, switching, and LOTO to ensure safe operations. These should follow Teraco procedures and consider:
  • PPE and risks from arc flash studies.
  • Clear communication about energization.
  • Proper signage for energized equipment and rooms.
  • Control of LOTO keys and mechanisms.
  • Access control to energized areas.
  • Accurate record keeping.
  • Verify qualifications, training, and PPE for personnel doing electrical work, and audit them regularly.
  • Ensure legal compliance, such as earthing certificates and certificates of compliance (COCs).
  • Develop and implement safe isolation and LOTO for all electrical work on site.

To meet these objectives, the Energy Marshall must:

  • Review all electrical designs and arc flash studies, raising any questions or issues on the project portal like BIM360.
  • Understand the overall project plan and timelines, and advise Project Managers on high-risk electrical activities.
  • Build professional relationships with Project Managers, the professional team, commissioning team, safety team, electrical contractors, and OEMs. Balance safety and speed in work, and help create practical risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) that minimize disruptions.
  • Perform due diligence through physical inspections to confirm work meets standards before energization.
  • Follow BIM360 checklist processes for energization.
  • Review and approve all RAMS and method statements for electrical work before it starts.
  • Conduct over-inspections and report safety or quality issues on BIM360.
  • Ensure contractors submit legal compliance documents on time, that the professional team checks them, and they are uploaded to portals. Flag any concerns to the GMR 2.1.
  • Report all related matters to the responsible GMR 2.1.

The Assistant Project Manager will:

  • Take proactive lead on delegated tasks, such as:
  • Reviewing non-technical method statements.
  • Supervising work in live areas.
  • Conducting health and safety site observations.
  • Executing project tasks.
  • Attending and participating in daily activity briefings (DABs).
  • Logging change controls.
  • Tracking quotations and purchase orders.
  • Coordinating site cleaning.
  • Coordinating site painting.
  • Handling post-integrated systems test (IST) snag fixes.
  • Assisting with logistics and rigging procedures.
  • Performing quality control (QC) inspections and escalating issues to the site Project Manager.
  • Review and understand client standards and requirements, ensuring project deliverables comply.
  • Facilitate handovers to Operations and Infrastructure teams.
  • Build strong working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Work with suppliers and subcontractors to create integrated project plans and meet quality and timeline goals.
  • Identify project risks and collaborate on mitigation with internal and external teams.
  • Assist in client project meetings, document decisions, and track actions.
  • Help manage project documentation, including Microsoft Project schedules, risk registers, minutes, action plans, and email trails.
  • Maintain a document repository based on project scope and risks.
  • Establish and communicate project budgets and timelines.
  • Handle procurement administration.
  • Manage documentation per Teraco processes (Autodesk and SharePoint).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Data Centre Certified Professional/Practitioner is an advantage.
  • Competent Electrical Artisan (Red Seal).
  • Minimum N5 (preferably N6) or Diploma or BTech.
  • Preferably completed OHVRS theory and/or competent in medium voltage (MV) experience.
  • Fair understanding of most of the following:
  • Environmental monitoring.
  • Generator deployment.
  • UPS systems.
  • Low voltage (LV)/medium low voltage (MLV).
  • Fire systems.
  • Cooling systems.
  • Biometric and CCTV security solutions.
  • Networking and switching.
  • Experience in Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
  • Experience with Microsoft Project.
  • Project Management qualification or experience.
