Job Description

The Dis-Chem Sandown store in Parklands is looking for a Frontshop Assistant. In this role, you will maintain high merchandising standards and support excellent customer service at the point of sale, following Dis-Chem’s policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Essential:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate
  • 0-6 months of retail work experience

Advantageous:

  • 1 year of work experience in retail
  • Certification in Retail Business Management

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure shelves are fully stocked with products at all times and presented neatly.
  • Check stock on shelves to prevent items from reaching their sell-by date.
  • Restock merchandise as needed to drive maximum sales.
  • Follow up on out-of-stock queries from customers using the customer service list and resolve them promptly.
  • Store and pack delivered stock or items from the storeroom in the correct locations.
  • Verify that merchandise displays, labels, and pricing are accurate, and report any price issues to management.
  • Keep the storeroom organized, neat, and tidy.
  • Stay updated on new products to assist customers effectively.
  • Help with restocking merchandise and supplies to support sales.
  • Assist with back shopping when required.
  • Handle all merchandise carefully to avoid losses.
  • Process transactions: receive, verify, and handle payments including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and other accepted methods.
  • Exchange merchandise or accept returns only when authorized by the Frontshop Leader.
  • Process all loyalty cards, including those from partner programs.
  • Place cash in the drop safe following standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure all line voids and price changes are approved and signed by a Frontshop Leader or Retail Store Assistant.
  • Maintain accurate cash flow at all times.
  • Rotate stock regularly and follow Dis-Chem’s stock control procedures.
  • Report low stock, out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and expired stock to management.
  • Assist with counting stock files and general stocktaking.
  • Identify and report damaged or expired stock to management immediately.
  • Help with loading and off-loading stock when needed.
  • Flatten boxes after unpacking and take them to the designated area.
  • Build professional relationships with customers, offering friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance and advice.
  • Report customer compliments and complaints to management.
  • Meet the company’s customer turnover per hour benchmark.
  • Assist in training new and existing team members.
  • Ensure all outgoing stock, items, or scripts are scanned and paid for.
  • Keep daily takings (cash, cheques, vouchers, card slips, line voids, and incomplete dockets) in the till drawer until placed in the drop safe.
  • Report any bad or suspicious behavior from staff or customers to management.
  • Maintain housekeeping to Dis-Chem standards.
  • Follow Dis-Chem policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Adhere to health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Comply with Dis-Chem’s uniform and personal appearance policy.

Competencies

Essential:

  • Knowledge of retail operations and administration
  • Ability to find solutions to issues and know when to escalate them appropriately
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Clear verbal communication of ideas and facts
  • Timely response to customer questions
  • Understanding and following relevant procedures
  • Personal responsibility for work quality and timeliness with minimal supervision

Advantageous:

  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook), numerical skills, and SAP experience
