Job Purpose

To conduct advanced audits of a complex nature to promote compliance by raising accurate assessments in line with relevant legislation. Provide technical support to other auditors and use knowledge of tax, corporate, and other laws to spot tax gaps, avoidance, and evasion schemes. Identify initiatives and changes to legislation that can improve compliance.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualification and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Accounting/Auditing/Taxation and 6 years’ experience in a tax audit environment.

Process

  • Gather information to review work progress, support reporting, decision-making, and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze complex data and evidence, review risks, and consider additional risks related to the audited entity across tax types, related entities, and more.
  • Examine complex transactions across multiple tax types, entities, or groups, including local and international ones, to understand tax implications.
  • Review large amounts of complex information during disputes and taxpayer complaints across linked or related entities.
  • Apply practical knowledge to identify trends and potential risks using methods, systems, and procedures.
  • Research complex tax risks not addressed by audits or other interventions and refer them to Case Selection for new audit focus areas, such as industry or tax-specific risks.
  • Communicate interpretations and judgments on work outputs and queries in your area of expertise.
  • Conduct advanced audits (plan, execute, finalize) in line with relevant acts, regulations, policies, and procedures using SARS systems.
  • Engage with Debt Management for optimal collection of liabilities from audits. Perform detailed financial and cash flow analysis and discuss debt collection with taxpayers at audit finalization.
  • Apply policies, practices, standards, procedures, and legislation correctly in your work.
  • Use your knowledge and experience to diagnose problems and their effects.
  • Work with Litigation and Dispute Management during and after audits on legal interpretations, considering similar cases and court outcomes. You may need to testify in civil court on complex matters.
  • Identify and suggest improvements to policies and procedures, and provide input to draft policies for tax types or process design.
  • Spot serious tax offences for criminal investigations, providing detailed analysis and legislation references. You may testify in criminal court.
  • Identify needed information to reduce audit risks and request it from taxpayers, practitioners, or third parties locally and internationally.
  • Spot new complex risks to expand audit scope or refer to Case Selection for new interventions.
  • Initiate and implement process changes, providing guidelines and support.
  • Manage audit progress for linked or related entities using approved systems.
  • Extract information from SARS systems and external sources to assess risks and compliance for linked entities locally and internationally.
  • Plan improvements, initiatives, and services to meet operational goals.
  • Prepare detailed reports and communications for stakeholders, ensuring alignment across related audits.
  • Provide inputs to committees based on analysis, participate, and present. Ensure consistent treatment of similar audits in committees like Technical or Objections Committee.
  • Guide Account Maintenance on penalty and interest remission requests.
  • Investigate opportunities for operational, process, product, and risk improvements.
  • Support other auditors with research, training, development, and coaching during audits or disputes.
  • Raise accurate assessments on SARS systems, ensuring alignment across entities.
  • Use digital tools to address complex audit risks, including eCommerce and other digital issues.
  • Use tax and legislative knowledge to identify gaps, avoidance, and evasion, and suggest legislative changes for better compliance.
  • Work with Electronic Forensic Services for large data downloads, specifying needs and risks.
