Assistant Manager Nursing – General

Requirements:
- Basic R425 qualification (Diploma or Degree in Nursing) or equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Proof of current SANC registration as a Professional Nurse.
- A minimum of 8 years appropriate experience in Nursing after SANC registration in General Nursing. At least 3 years of this must be at management level.
- (Less than 1 year experience for candidates from outside the public service after meeting registration requirements). Must be computer literate and hold a Diploma or Degree in Health Services Management.
- Basic understanding of HR and financial policies and practices. Basic understanding of the legislative framework for the public service.
- Ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team and ensure good nursing care at area or facility level. In-depth understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical practices and their impact on service delivery.
- Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and relevant legal frameworks such as the Nursing Act, Health Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act. Strong communication skills are essential.
Duties:
- Ensure clinical nursing practice by the team is in line with the scope of practice and nursing standards set by the health facility.
- Promote quality nursing care according to professional standards. Communicate effectively with supervisors, other health professionals, support staff, and junior colleagues, including writing complex reports when needed.
- Work well at management level with people from diverse intellectual, cultural, racial, or religious backgrounds. Manage own work and that of reporting units, ensuring interventions to improve nursing services at area or facility level. Create a nursing environment that respects patient rights, advocates for proper treatment and care, and follows Batho Pele principles.
- Build and maintain professional networks. Delegate, supervise, and coordinate effective patient care through quality nursing. Initiate and join health promotion activities to communicate accurate and comprehensive health information.
- Develop and maintain constructive relationships with nursing and other stakeholders, including inter-professional, inter-sectoral, and multi-disciplinary teamwork.
- Manage, monitor, and ensure proper use of human, financial, and physical resources. Participate in analyzing, developing, and implementing nursing guidelines, practices, standards, and procedures. Relieve as night supervisor when needed. Join the nursing management team.
- Act on behalf of the Nursing Service Manager (day or night) and other managers, especially on nights and after hours. Provide recommendations, advice, and information through reports, letters, and memos.
- Offer general and strategic advice, nursing, and management support. Maintain professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development. Participate in SANC activities, Nurses’ Day events, and promote the image of nursing and the hospital.
- Ensure compliance with the Ideal Hospital Framework, Batho Pele principles, patient rights, and Infection Prevention and Control. Help manage complaints and patient safety incidents.
