Requirements

  • Basic R425 qualification (Diploma or Degree in Nursing) or equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse.
  • Proof of current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse.
  • A minimum of 8 years appropriate or recognizable experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council in General Nursing.
  • At least 3 years of the above experience must be at management level. (Less than 1 year of experience for candidates appointed from outside the public service, after complying with registration requirements).
  • Must be computer literate and have a Diploma or Degree in Health Services Management. Demonstrate a basic understanding of HR and financial policies and practices.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the legislative framework governing the public service. Ability to direct a multi-disciplinary team and ensure good nursing care at area or facility level. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices and how these impact service delivery.
  • Knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures, nursing statutes, and other relevant legal frameworks such as the Nursing Act, Health Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act. Strong communication skills are essential.

Duties

  • Ensure that clinical nursing practice by the nursing team (area or facility) is rendered in accordance with the scope of practice and nursing standards as determined by the relevant health facility.
  • Promote quality of nursing care as directed by the professional scope of practice and standards as determined by the relevant health facility.
  • Demonstrate effective communication with supervisors, other health professionals, support services personnel, and junior colleagues, including more complex report writing when required.
  • Work effectively and amicably at management level with people of diverse intellectual, cultural, racial, or religious differences. Manage own work and that of units reporting to the post, and ensure appropriate interventions to enhance nursing services at area or facility level.
  • Develop and maintain a nursing service environment that promotes the rights of patients, advocates and facilitates proper treatment and care, and ensures adherence to Batho Pele principles.
  • Develop contacts, build, and maintain a network of professional relations. Delegate, supervise, and coordinate the provision of effective and efficient patient care through adequate nursing care.
  • Initiate and participate in health promotion to ensure consistent communication of relevant, accurate, and comprehensive health care information.
  • Develop, establish, and maintain constructive working relationships with nursing and other stakeholders (inter-professional, inter-sectoral, and multi-disciplinary teamwork).
  • Manage, monitor, and ensure proper utilization of human, financial, and physical resources. Participate in the analysis, formulation, and implementation of nursing guidelines, practices, standards, and procedures. Relieve on nights as a supervisor and participate in the nursing management team.
  • Act on behalf of the Nursing Services Manager (day or night) and other managers, especially on nights and after hours. Provide recommendations, advice, and information in the form of reports, letters, and memos.
  • Provide general and strategic advice, nursing, and management support. Maintain professional growth, ethical standards, and self-development, including involvement in SANC and Nurses’ Day activities, and promoting the image of both nursing and the hospital.
  • Ensure compliance with the Ideal Hospital Framework, Batho Pele principles, patient rights, and Infection Prevention and Control. Contribute to managing complaints and patient safety incidents.
