The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation became a public entity on 15 July 2001 in terms of the South African Weather Service Act (No. 8 of 2001), as amended in 2013. It is an authoritative voice for weather and climate forecasting in South Africa.
Meteorological Trainer: Regional Training Centre

Key Performance Areas:
- Deliver theoretical lectures and practical training to students at the Regional Training Centre.
- Develop and improve courses under the National Certificate: Weather Observations of SAWS, and assist with other courses when needed.
- Design, develop, and deliver online, face-to-face, or blended learning courses to commercial clients.
- Create short courses and blended learning options for ongoing training of meteorology personnel.
- Transfer courses to the Moodle distance learning platform for online delivery and keep them updated.
- Manage the administration of courses, including commercial ones, on the SAWS online learning platform.
- Receive and respond to meteorological enquiries.
- Identify risks at the Regional Training Centre and needs for procurement.
- Network with external stakeholders, especially training institutions, and internal stakeholders where relevant.
- Participate in continuous training and training needs analysis for Meteorological Technicians in South Africa, the SADC region, and beyond.
- Handle administrative duties, including training needs analysis, student reports, and monthly training reports to the Qualification Manager: Observations.
- Know all Regional Training Centre regulations, WMO competency requirements for Meteorological Technicians, and South African National Qualifications Framework rules under the relevant Quality Council.
- Stay updated with developments in the meteorological field.
- Conduct scientific research in a field of interest to become a specialist in meteorology.
- Act as research leader for students in the National Certificate: Weather Observations course.
- Participate in Assessor and Moderator training and other training as per personal development plan.
- Help maintain the Total Quality Management platform for the Regional Training Centre, especially for assigned courses and other areas when required.
- Be involved in other research and international programmes based on expertise.
- Represent the Regional Training Centre in areas of specialization at regional and international meteorological bodies when needed.
- Stay informed about developments in SAQA, relevant SETA, and QCTO, and engage actively with these processes.
- As part of a WMO-recognised Regional Training Centre, keep up with the latest developments in Meteorological Technician competencies to provide effective training.
Minimum Requirements:
- An appropriate 4-year tertiary qualification in Atmospheric Sciences or Meteorology, such as a BSc (Hons) in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences.
- A minimum of 2 years’ work experience in meteorological observation practices.
- Strong knowledge and skills in weather observations, including Aviation Observer Competencies, and quality control of climate data.
- Fluency in English.
- Knowledge of electronics is an added advantage.
