Requirements
- Baccalaureus Technologiae (BTech) in Biomedical Technology. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technologist, plus proof of current registration.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience after HPCSA registration as a Medical Technologist, including 3 years at a supervisory level. Knowledge of laboratory processes, procedures, and Electronic Gate Keeping rules.
- Assertiveness and good interpersonal skills. Basic understanding of finance. Skills in general management, communication, analysis, and computer use.
Duties
- Support, monitor, and evaluate laboratory services and point-of-care services in the district. Improve screening of NHLS request forms to prevent errors.
- Monitor linking of laboratory requests to healthcare facility accounts. Check and stop tests with missing data on NHLS forms. Prepare monthly reports on district spending and use of the NHLS budget.
- Ensure compliance with Electronic Gate Keeping (EGK) rules and train clinicians on these guidelines. Advise management on maximizing NHLS services and reducing unnecessary rejections.
- Guide management on point-of-care testing instruments, following approved national guidelines.
- Support district health programs and take part in internal and external audits by the Office of Health Standards Compliance. Handle other lab duties as assigned by district management.
- Train clinicians on lab use. Keep an updated list of healthcare professionals for the NHLS Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Set up platforms or committees to discuss and improve lab services with stakeholders, as per the Service Level Agreement. Support and train hospital lab coordinators in the district.
