Job Overview

Dis-Chem Blaauw is looking for a Casual Front Shop Assistant to maintain merchandising standards and support customer service at the point of sale, following Dis-Chem policies and procedures.

Essential Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate
  • 0–6 months of retail work experience

Advantageous Requirements:

  • 1 year of work experience in retail
  • Certification in Retail Business Management

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure full ranges of products are always on the shelves and neatly presented.
  • Check stock on shelves to prevent sell-by date issues.
  • Restock merchandise as needed to boost sales.
  • Handle out-of-stock queries from customers promptly, using the customer service list.
  • Store and pack delivered stock or storeroom items in the correct places.
  • Verify merchandise displays, labels, and pricing; report any price errors to management.
  • Keep the storeroom organized, neat, and tidy.
  • Stay updated on new products to assist customers effectively.
  • Help restock merchandise and supplies to maximize sales.
  • Assist with back shopping when required.
  • Handle all merchandise carefully to avoid losses.
  • Process all purchases: receive, verify, and handle payments like cash, cards, vouchers, and coupons.
  • Exchange merchandise or accept returns when authorized by the Front Shop Leader.
  • Process loyalty cards, including those from partner programs.
  • Place cash in the drop safe following standard procedures.
  • Get approval for line voids and price changes from the Front Shop Leader or Retail Store Assistant.
  • Maintain accurate cash flow at all times.
  • Rotate stock regularly and follow Dis-Chem stock control procedures.
  • Report low stock, out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and expired stock to management.
  • Assist with counting stock files and general stocktaking.
  • Identify and report damaged or expired stock immediately to management.
  • Help load and offload stock when needed.
  • Flatten boxes after unpacking and take them to the designated area.
  • Build professional relationships with customers; provide friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance.
  • Report customer compliments and complaints to management.
  • Meet the customer turnover per hour benchmark.
  • Assist in training new and existing team members.
  • Ensure outgoing stock, items, or scripts are scanned and paid for.
  • Keep daily takings (cash, cheques, vouchers, card slips, line voids, and incomplete dockets) in the till drawer until placed in the drop safe.
  • Report any bad or suspicious behavior from staff or customers to management.
  • Maintain housekeeping to Dis-Chem standards.
  • Follow Dis-Chem policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Adhere to health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Follow the Dis-Chem uniform and personal appearance policy.

Essential Competencies:

  • Knowledge of retail operations and administration.
  • Ability to find solutions to issues and know when to escalate them.
  • Basic math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Respond to customer queries promptly.
  • Follow procedures and recognize their importance.
  • Take responsibility for work quality and timeliness with minimal supervision.

Advantageous Competencies:

  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook), numerical skills, and SAP experience.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to work retail hours.
  • South African citizen.
  • MIE, no criminal record, and clear credit rating.
  • Driver’s license and own reliable transport.
