Veterinary Nurse Internship – Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital

Responsibilities:

The intern will handle the following duties:

• Patient care, including monitoring, feeding, handling, and assisting with procedures.
• Clinic management, such as hygiene, stock control, pharmacy orders, equipment care, safety measures, and charge sheets.
• Assisting with practical training for students.
• Communicating with clients, sales representatives, private practitioners, and visiting students.
• Helping with practical demonstrations and guiding students and student nurses in tasks like preparing drips.
• Maintaining biosecurity and safety standards, applying policies, and reporting any issues.
• Personal development.
• Flexibility to work in other sections of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital.
• Performing shift duties.

Minimum Requirements:

• BVetNurse qualification.
• Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council.

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge, and Behavioral Attributes):

• Knowledge of small and large animal nursing procedures, biosecurity measures, and handling various small animals.
• Knowledge of ICU equipment.
• Knowledge of basic diagnostic imaging equipment.
• Knowledge of theatre equipment and instruments.
• Attention to detail, professionalism, and responsibility.
• Good language and communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and service orientation.
• Physical mobility.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Computer literacy.
• Availability to work weekends and outside normal hours for hospital service delivery.
• Willingness to perform shift duties.

• Registration with the Veterinary Nursing Association of South Africa.
