Requirements:
- R425 Diploma or Degree in Nursing that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. A post-basic nursing qualification of at least one year, accredited by SANC in one of the specialties, such as R2598 (Clinical Nursing Science Health Assessment, Treatment and Care).
- A qualification in Health Service Management or Nursing Administration of at least one year, accredited by SANC. A background in healthcare management or public health is an advantage.
- A minimum of 9 years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing.
- At least 4 years of that experience must be in Communicable Disease Control or Disease Surveillance at a coordinated program level. Experience in project management (an added advantage), disease surveillance, infection prevention and control, health information systems, monitoring, and evaluation is preferred.
- A valid driver’s license and computer literacy are required. Show a deep understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical practices.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of human resource and financial policies and practices. Knowledge of relevant public service legislation. Strong communication and writing skills. Good human relations.
Duties:
- Plan and organize your own work, time, and that of support teams to ensure proper program implementation. Alert healthcare workers and managers about surveillance activities.
- Support, monitor, and evaluate notifiable disease surveillance in the district. Work with provincial surveillance officers, EPI/CDC programs (such as Environmental and Port Health, Infection Prevention and Control, Health Promotion, and Nutrition), facility managers, hospitals, and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) for tests and results when needed.
- Support activities to improve surveillance quality for priority EPI/CDC conditions (including record reviews, obtaining clinical notes, and cold chain maintenance). Conduct regular active surveillance visits to health facilities in the district based on priority levels. Coordinate case investigations and outbreak responses.
- Manage data effectively (collect, capture, collate, analyze, and interpret surveillance data). Participate in monitoring the impact of vaccination, surveillance, disease trends, EPI, vaccine-preventable diseases, and communicable diseases research as required. Ensure processing of case investigation reports.
- Monitor progress toward polio eradication and neonatal tetanus elimination using WHO indicators. Help develop training materials for notifiable diseases and build capacity for district health officers through training and support visits. Participate in planning and activities to improve surveillance and meet district, provincial, and national objectives.
- Evaluate and monitor compliance with National Core Standards. Attend meetings for communicable diseases and outbreak response at district and provincial levels, and provide feedback. Compile monthly updates on notifiable diseases, follow up on pending cases, maintain line listings of reported cases, and share feedback with sub-districts.
- Ensure adherence to scheduled quarterly report submissions to sub-districts and stakeholders through EPI team meetings. Work well under pressure and support all district activities. Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor or manager.
