Senior Artisan – Utilities and Services

The role is to ensure reliable and smooth operation of plant utilities. You will lead a team of artisans, utilities staff, and apprentices. This includes people management and following RCL Foods practices at all times. All statutory requirements must be met, as per the OHS Act.

Minimum Requirements

  • A National Diploma in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Refrigeration) is advantageous.
  • Minimum N6 in Engineering Studies is essential.
  • Trade-tested artisan in mechanical/electrical engineering or refrigeration is essential.
  • Registration with SAQCC GAS is advantageous.
  • Competency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of operation and maintenance of utilities equipment.
  • Registration with SAQCC GAS as CAT B.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a supervisory role, with experience in ammonia refrigeration systems and other utilities equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Check daily Plant Inspection Lists from artisans. Verify inspections for critical plant like spiral freezers, air compressors, boilers, ammonia plant, condensers, chillers, and blast freezers.
  • Manage critical stock and spares. Determine essential spare parts for the engineering stores. Monitor wet stock (boiler fuel, cooking area coolant) and liaise with the buyer and storeman for smooth operations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair. Assist the team with fault finding as per the escalation process.
  • Address issues with low MTBF or long MTTR, including recurring problems.
  • Ensure root cause analyses (RCA) for breakdowns are done within the set time.
  • Close all non-conformance reports (NCRs) on time with good quality.
  • Liaise with service providers (contractors and suppliers) to ensure they follow quality and safety regulations.

Compliance

  • Ensure all employees and contractors follow the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993).
  • Follow safety regulations for ammonia handling, pressure vessels, critical valves, and other requirements under OHS Act, SANS 10147, and related standards.
  • Complete all statutory inspections on time, including pressure vessels, boilers, compressors, earth leakage testing, fuel storage tanks, lighting, emergency generator, emergency lighting, fire sprinklers, and diesel pump.
  • Ensure the general building meets Act 103 of 1977 and SANS 10400 (for existing structures and renovations).
  • Keep detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Develop quick fix routines in your areas of responsibility.
  • Create and update safe work procedures and instructions.
  • Ensure all quality, housekeeping, safety, and production standards are met.
  • Assist technicians and train apprentices and assistants.

Team Management

Maintain healthy working relationships within the team.

  • Manage shift rosters and keep overtime within statutory limits.
  • Plan and authorise weekend plant work with the Maintenance Planner.
  • Sign off hours on the time system.
  • Ensure all management and HR communications reach the team, including toolbox talks and new procedures.
  • Prepare the team for emergency procedures and safety equipment use, with adequate training.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
  • Control monthly costs within the budget.
  • Promote continuous improvement in utilities usage across the site.
