Job Purpose
To provide accounting support by coordinating and managing accounting functions, conducting proper account reconciliations, and ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting practices at SARS.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualification and Experience Required
- Relevant Bachelor’s Degree / Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) and 5-7 years’ experience in Finance, Accounting, or a similar environment, including 2-3 years at a technically skilled level (e.g., resolving financial and accounting queries and generating accounting reports).
Alternative (for internal SARS staff)
- Senior Certificate (NQF 4) with 10 years’ related experience in Finance and Accounting, including 2-3 years at a technically skilled level (e.g., resolving financial and accounting queries and generating accounting reports).
Minimum Functions Required
- Maintain financial records (such as tax returns, assessments, payments, interest, penalties, journals, and refunds) in the sub-ledger and report on exceptions.
- Perform independent reconciliations, investigate and resolve routine and complex discrepancies, and provide guidance to others.
- Analyze sub-ledger accounts, transactional listings, and Statements of Account to identify discrepancies and misalignments with other systems or third-party information, then formulate solutions.
- Monitor systems and accounts to identify defects, and ensure fixes are properly tested and implemented.

- Ensure accurate communication with relevant SARS offices about discrepancies and errors, advising on adjustments.
- Develop and maintain regular reports using the applicable SARS accounting system.
- Provide specialist input through investigations and identify opportunities, including risk concerns.
- Monitor, verify, and review outstanding information to process transactions accurately and prevent fraud.
- Accumulate information to track work progress, support reporting, decision-making, and identify improvements.
- Apply practical knowledge to identify trends and potential risks using methods, systems, and procedures.
- Communicate interpretations, judgments, and work outputs related to your area of specialization.
- Apply policies, practices, standards, procedures, and legislation correctly.
- Diagnose symptoms, causes, and effects to solve emerging problems based on your knowledge and experience.
