Requirements

  • MBChB degree (or equivalent) that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner. Current HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner for 2025 (Independent Practice). Note: The appointed Medical Officer must be able to work shifts.
  • A valid work permit is required for non-South Africans.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics, multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and experience in the relevant medical discipline.
  • Knowledge of current health and public service regulations and policies.
  • Skills in consultations, history taking, examination, clinical assessment, and management.
  • For Grade 1: No experience required after HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice). Foreign-qualified applicants need at least 1 year of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health professions body or the HPCSA.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics, multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and experience in the medical discipline.
  • Strong clinical knowledge, competency, and skills in general clinical areas. Ability to work under supervision as an efficient team member.
  • Good communication, leadership, interpersonal, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to manage patients independently and responsibly, and to seek help when needed.
  • Knowledge of current health policies, legislation, programs, and priorities.
  • Ability to teach and guide junior staff.
  • Behavioral attributes: Stress tolerance, teamwork, self-confidence, and ability to build and maintain good relationships.

Duties

  • Perform duties proficiently to support the institution’s aims and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Accept responsibility for managing patients in a level 2/3 service facility.
  • Assist in preparing and implementing guidelines and protocols.
  • Participate in academic and training programs.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical knowledge in medicine and handle all medical emergencies.
  • Follow ethical medical practices.
  • Assist with clinical audits and actively participate in continuous professional development.
  • Support hospital management to maintain efficient patient care and services.
