Horticulturist

SANBI seeks a passionate and motivated individual to lead the development and upkeep of the Proteaceae and Restionaceae display gardens and living collections at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Horticulture or an equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Horticulture or equivalent at NQF 8 is an advantage.
  • 6 years of experience in Horticulture, including at least 3 years in a supervisory role as a practicing Horticulturist.

Key Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of indigenous horticulture and conservation.
  • Understanding of propagation methods, protocols, and processes.
  • Experience with propagation facilities, field collecting, plant introduction, and care.
  • Skills in long-term curation and maintenance of living plant collections.
  • Knowledge of landscaping with fynbos and natural design elements.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of conservation workers in gardens and nurseries.
  • Experience working with conservation stakeholders.
  • Advanced planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure while prioritizing safety.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, and Outlook.
  • A valid driver’s license with at least one year of practical driving experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, maintain, and develop garden displays and living collections.
  • Lead a team and ensure high performance levels.
  • Coordinate the curation of living collections in the garden and nursery.
  • Promote and take part in horticultural, plant conservation, and research projects.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement projects that support SANBI’s and Kirstenbosch’s mission.
