The Department of Correctional Services is a department of the South African government. It is responsible for running South Africa’s prison system. The department has about 34,000 staff and is responsible for the administration of 240 prisons, which house about 189,748 inmates.

Requirements:
- A degree in Law (LLB) at NQF level 7 or an equivalent qualification recognized by SAQA. Five (5) years of experience at a middle management or senior managerial level in a similar environment. A certificate for entry into the Senior Management Services (SMS) from the National School of Government (NSG) is required. Being admitted as an advocate or attorney is an advantage. Computer literacy is essential. A valid driver’s licence is needed.
Required Knowledge:
- Understanding of the Justice Cluster dynamics. Knowledge of public service policies and related laws, such as the Public Service Act and Regulations, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 as amended. Experience in the regulatory framework for public service planning. Experience in collective bargaining and efficient human resource management. In-depth knowledge of human resources legislation and regulations.

Responsibilities:
- Manage litigation risks in the department. Develop and implement plans to reduce litigation risks within the Department of Correctional Services (DCS). Represent the department’s interests in litigation matters. Determine the responsibility of officials who caused liability to the department. Provide legal advice to management on key legal issues. Analyze litigation trends and advise on high-risk areas and needed interventions. Manage contingent liabilities for the department. Provide leadership and strategic direction to the chief directorate. Align the directorate with departmental objectives through strategic direction and leadership. Develop operational plans to guide the directorate’s activities. Link individual performance to the component’s operational plans and business objectives. Implement and report on strategic frameworks in the area of responsibility. Monitor and evaluate performance standards against departmental goals. Offer legal support to management for decision-making. Ensure effective management of the directorate for quality service delivery. Take decisive action on legal matters and assess complex issues. Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Manage human resources, finances, assets, and performance information.
