Test Officer – Mining & Minerals

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is a statutory body established under the Standards Act, 1945 (Act No. 24 of 1945). It continues to operate under the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 29 of 2008) as the national body for promoting and maintaining standardization and quality in the country.

Purpose Statement

To conduct testing, prepare test reports, and support other laboratory activities to help achieve the division’s and business’s goals. Ensure the laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS) meets SANAS and ISO accreditation standards.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or National Diploma in Chemistry (NQF Level 6)
  • Technical signatory status is required

Work Experience

  • 3 years of experience in the Mining and Minerals sector
  • Experience in a SANS-accredited Mining and Minerals Laboratory is essential

Duties and Responsibilities

Functional Management

  • Oversee and perform manual or automated tests, and record results as needed
  • Receive and log all client samples before testing
  • Plan and prepare for conducting tests
  • Analyze test results from records or generated data
  • Prepare and check test reports for technical accuracy and completeness
  • Verify the quality of all test reports produced in the laboratory
  • Interpret test standards and methods, and prepare reports
  • Develop and manage testing schedules with the team
  • Research, develop, and validate new testing methods
  • Perform witness testing for internal and external clients to show and confirm testing processes
  • Conduct proficiency testing for industry benchmarks when required
  • Prepare and follow calibration and maintenance procedures; ensure all equipment is calibrated and maintained
  • Perform root cause analysis in the laboratory and implement corrective and preventive measures
  • Apply maintenance and basic troubleshooting as needed
  • Calibrate and verify test equipment
  • Account for all laboratory assets in your area and join asset verification activities
  • Prepare equipment commissioning reports and handle asset registration and capitalization per SABS policies in a timely manner
  • Process samples and take part in proficiency schemes, including intra- and inter-laboratory comparisons
  • Participate in in-house test validations to confirm results
  • Carry out all tasks to maintain the Quality Management System and accreditation; support the QMS per the Quality Manual and relevant technical standards
  • Prepare for internal audits and follow audit processes
  • Provide input on technical specifications and requirements for quotations
  • Review customer needs and ensure they match technical (testing) specifications
  • Advise customers on interpreting and applying technical (testing) specifications
  • Train stakeholders on testing equipment when needed
  • Document and report errors in specifications or standard documents to Standard Writers
  • Conduct training and coaching for other Test Officers, and mentor those seeking Technical Signatory status
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety rules and procedures
  • Stay updated on changes in Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Keep informed about developments in technical committees, working groups, and industry trends
  • Complete the Competence Development Plan (CDP) for the next level

Risk and Compliance Management

  • Help identify and follow fraud controls, risk prevention, governance, and compliance processes; use tools to manage risks
  • Support preparations and provide evidence for internal and external audits
  • Maintain quality risk management standards as per laws and accreditation rules
  • Follow all relevant laws, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures across the organization

Stakeholder Management

  • Build and keep strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders for managing expectations, sharing knowledge, integrating efforts, and protecting the organization’s reputation
  • Represent the organization in committees and task teams when needed
  • Attend and lead meetings (e.g., technical committees, working groups) and share relevant information with stakeholders
  • Deliver excellent customer service
  • Resolve queries and issues within your control and agreed timelines
  • Follow up on unresolved queries and complaints as needed
  • Communicate with stakeholders for follow-up information when required
