Purpose of Job

  • A Locomotive Driver moves trains from the exchange yard to loading and unloading points at different business units.

Key Accountabilities

  • Complete site orientation and training on schedule. Get theoretical training at the academy to meet standards. Do practical training by finishing shifts under the guidance of experienced Locomotive Drivers.
  • Shunt and haul trains within Sasol Secunda boundaries.
  • Use the TFR/Sasol exchange yards.
  • Drive and operate trains safely and on time, following the train schedule and rules. Make sure customer freight arrives in good condition.
  • Handle administrative tasks related to train services and operations.
  • Ensure the train’s safety at all times. Follow safety standards and train rules to keep the area free of hazards.
  • Give clear instructions to the Rail Operator and oversee all footplate activities as per the schedule.
  • Communicate well under pressure due to the important safety aspects of the job. Help the company meet its daily goals.
  • Understand instructions, notices, rules, and verbal messages clearly. Use radio well during operations.
  • Work with the Rail Controller and others to handle unusual situations.
  • Move loads from a minimum of 40 wagons (2000 tons) to a maximum of 71 wagons (3600 tons).
  • Handle all types of loads, including containers and hazardous materials.

Formal Education

  • Matric / Grade 12

Working Experience

  • 2 or more years of relevant experience

Certification

  • Competency certificate for Loco Drivers
