Job Summary

The role holder will ensure fraud controls are effectively implemented and monitored. This includes both manual controls such as fraud sampling, exception reports, and spot checks, as well as system-based monitoring and detection for all fraud-related activities. You will support the execution of the fraud strategy as set at country level, monitor workflow and fraud prevention/detection activities within assigned portfolios to ensure completion within agreed service levels, and submit relevant returns and management information to Fraud Management.

Key Responsibilities

Fraud Risk Management and Monitoring (80%)

  • Work closely with the Fraud Manager and team members to deliver exceptional business performance across defined portfolios
  • Embed fraud prevention and detection processes and procedures, including systems to manage fraud losses within the given budget for each portfolio
  • Research and investigate suspected frauds, operational losses, staff fraud, and other breaches on behalf of the Head of Unit within defined timeframes
  • Deliver on the fraud management programs derived from the RBB and CIB policies to reduce losses across various portfolios including:
    • Monitoring of Debit & Credit Card transactions
    • Monitoring of Device & Session activities
    • Product/Application Sampling & Review
    • Monitoring of Merchant Transactions
    • Monitoring of Client’s Profile & High-Risk Channels
    • Monitoring of Internal Activities and Accounts
    • Customer Site Visits (where applicable)
  • Conduct necessary preliminary checks to determine authenticity of documents, customer or third-party identity, and truthfulness of details as required
  • Undertake monthly reconciliation of fraud losses and recoveries against appropriate P&L accounts and submit for review to the Fraud Manager
  • Perform desktop investigations on fraud-related incidents, examine relevant records and documentation, interview parties as needed, and report findings to the Fraud Manager and Head of Unit
  • Support tracking and implementation of fraud recommendations from the Forensic Investigation team, and provide root cause analysis to the business with remedial recommendations
  • Proactively utilize available fraud detection tools and systems for data-mining activities and analytics to enhance proactive identification and detection of fraud
  • Support the Fraud Manager with various management reporting by providing relevant information, and assist with compiling and consolidating country fraud KRIs
  • Advocate fraud awareness and best practices with business colleagues and external customers
  • Deliver on the spot-check plan at branches and other high-risk operational areas on a regular basis
  • Update the central fraud database and conduct parameter reviews (in conjunction with Fraud Strategy) utilizing Forensic Investigation reports, articles in newspapers, news bulletins, DC&G outcomes, and other relevant sources

Risk Management (10%)

  • Adhere to Operational Risk policy by ensuring risk events are raised within 24 hours whenever fraud is identified
  • Diarize regular monitoring and reporting required as part of Fraud Standards and Policies
  • Support ongoing monitoring of fraudulent activities by providing guidance based on profiling and intelligence
  • Escalate irregular activities or possible fraud to senior management
  • Support stakeholders in complying with regulatory and internal fraud policies
  • Assist the team in satisfactorily closing all findings related to assurance work and external reviews

Risk and Control (10%)

  • Ensure all activities and duties comply fully with regulatory requirements, Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework, and internal Absa Policies and Policy Standards

Education and Qualifications

  • Diploma in Business Studies, Business Administration, or equivalent in any Business-related field
  • Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC): Law, Military Science and Security

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Sound and practical experience of bank systems and operational processes
  • Prior experience handling customer disputes and complaints
  • Exposure to governance, control, and risk management
  • Risk management skills and knowledge of different fraud types
  • Proven ability to work effectively within teams at all levels
  • Understanding of Absa governance processes and policies
  • Broad understanding of technology used in transaction monitoring and review
  • Service-driven mindset with customer relationship management skills
  • Very strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail

Job Summary

The purpose of this role is to conduct in-depth, specialized, and quality credit assessments and risk analysis on potential and existing commercial portfolio clients. This enhances the decision-making process for determining the Bank’s appetite to extend credit. The role involves financial analysis, interpretation, and capturing of client information including company financial statements and qualitative data.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management

  • Monitor client performance continuously for risk indicators and perform formal reviews at specified intervals to identify changes in the client’s business or operating environment
  • Monitor adherence to covenants and conditions continuously, discussing deviations and concerns with the Sales team and escalating to Line Management and Credit when necessary
  • Adhere to ARMS credit requirements as stipulated in Absa credit policy
  • Monitor and report boundary events in terms of the Operational Risk Boundary
  • Obtain input from Product Industry Specialists to assist in client solutioning and the credit application process
  • Identify the need for meetings between high-risk clients, Credit, and Business Support
  • Request updated valuations on properties serving as security for facilities in line with Absa Credit policies
  • Manage and communicate risks associated with outstanding securities
  • Proactively identify problematic or high-risk clients, advising Credit accordingly and implementing loss preventative measures such as Early Warning List (EWL) Reports
  • Request and manage outstanding Financial Statements as stipulated in Absa Credit policy
  • Action and manage daily referrals, rectifications, and credit system outputs including Odex, Referrals, REPL, and REPC
  • Contact clients on referral listings for rectification

Credit Management

  • Explore new, improved, and alternative ways of solutioning client credit requirements
  • Adhere to Bank’s credit policies and procedures, ensuring full compliance and that policy breaches are suitably addressed and mitigated
  • Provide bank codes and reports on clients
  • Proactively manage credit risks associated with the portfolio of clients and their related products
  • Manage and drive the deal forum process to ensure quality applications are submitted to sanctioners with sustainable credit solutions

Portfolio Financial and Operational Management

  • Compile reviews, amendments, and new applications to appropriate lending authorities
  • Issue facility letters to clients after reviews are completed and new facilities are granted
  • Draft and issue reminder letters when facilities approach expiry according to policy requirements (30-, 60-, and 90-day letters)
  • Contribute to Non-Interest Income by ensuring recovery of manual fees (e.g., reviews, valuations) to avoid revenue leakages
  • Spread client’s financials on various Credit Risk Grading models including Agri Model, Public Sector Model, RiskCalc Model, and Triad
  • Provide Default Grading (DG) output from Credit Risk models
  • Capture all information on risk grading models with 100% accuracy, verifying that all models balance

Client Solutioning and Customer Service

  • Identify cross-sell opportunities from analysis of client financials, account conduct, and industry changes, passing leads to Relationship Executives or Transactional Bankers
  • Participate in sales best practice sessions with relevant stakeholders, providing credit input to mitigate risk on identified product offerings or new acquisitions, and monitoring progress through the sales funnel until conversion
  • Conduct research on industries in which portfolio clients operate to understand overall profitability, industry trends, and client market standing relative to competitors
