Job Purpose

To conduct advanced audits to promote compliance by raising accurate assessments that follow relevant laws.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualification and Experience Required

  • National Diploma or Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) in Accounting, Auditing, or Taxation, plus 4 years of experience in a tax audit environment.

Job Outputs

Process

  • Gather information and provide reports with recommendations in your area of expertise.
  • Analyze data and evidence, review risks, and consider additional risks related to the audited entity, across tax types and related entities.
  • Review information from disputes and taxpayer complaints.
  • Analyze transactions across multiple tax types, entities, or groups to understand tax impacts.
  • Apply knowledge of methods, systems, and procedures to spot trends and risks.
  • Research to identify tax risks not covered by audits or other actions. Refer these to Case Selection for new audit focus areas, like industry or tax-specific risks.
  • Communicate interpretations and judgments on work outputs and queries.
  • Conduct advanced audits (plan, execute, finalize) following relevant laws, regulations, policies, and standard procedures using SARS systems.
  • Apply policies, practices, standards, procedures, and laws correctly in your work.
  • Plan and schedule your activities to improve quality and service.
  • Work with Debt Management during and after audits to collect liabilities. Provide financial analysis for recommendations on debt collection, including at committees like the Debt Committee. Discuss debt collection with taxpayers at audit end.
  • Assist Client Service with taxpayer issues needing direct auditor input, based on your expertise.
  • Engage with Litigation and Dispute teams during and after audits on legal interpretations. Consider similar cases and court outcomes. You may need to testify in civil court.
  • Handle process changes, implement them, and provide guidelines on new requirements.
  • Suggest improvements to policies and procedures. Provide input to draft policies for tax product areas, Process Design, and Engineering.
  • Identify serious tax offences for criminal investigations. Provide detailed facts and legal analysis. You may testify in criminal court.
  • Determine needed information to reduce audit risks and request it from taxpayers or practitioners.
  • Spot new risks for audit expansion or referrals to Case Selection for other tax types and entities.
  • Manage audit progress using approved systems. Update notes on progress and outcomes, such as in Service Manager or Teammate.
  • Use SARS systems and external sources to gather and assess risks and compliance.
  • Prepare and share reports and communications with stakeholders. Ensure alignment across related audits.
  • Provide inputs based on facts and laws. Participate in and present to committees like Technical, Understatement, Large Assessment, Objections, or National Appeals. Highlight similar audit treatments for consistency.
  • Investigate ways to optimize operations, processes, products, and risks.
  • Raise accurate assessments on SARS systems per relevant laws.
  • Provide inputs to Account Maintenance for penalty and interest remission requests.
  • Use knowledge and judgment to make decisions.
  • Use digital tools and systems to handle advanced audit risks, including eCommerce.
  • For large data downloads, work with Electronic Forensic Services (EFS). Specify data needs and risks to identify files.
