Purpose of the Role
This role involves assisting with projects of various sizes, technical scopes, and complexities. Projects include large custom client deployments, from colocation setups to entire data center hall deployments. Key duties include:
- Assisting the site Project Manager with all project-related tasks.
- Handling safe switching, energization, de-energization, lock out/tag out (LOTO), and access to live or energized rooms during construction and fit-out.
- Participating in inspections and approvals for energization, and enforcing rules and regulations, including national standards, company procedures, and site-specific guidelines for electricity on the construction site.
- Carrying legal responsibility with a GMR 2.7 appointment under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and regulations.
Main Functions
For the Energy Marshall:
- Compile and maintain site-specific procedures for energization, switching, and LOTO to ensure safe operations. Base these on existing company procedures, considering PPE based on arc flash studies, effective communication, signage for energized areas, control of LOTO keys, access to energized rooms, and record keeping.
- Verify qualifications, training, and PPE for personnel doing electrical work, and audit them regularly.
- Ensure legal compliance with earthing certificates, certificates of compliance (COCs), and similar documents.
- Develop and implement safe isolation and LOTO processes for all electrical work on site.
To achieve these objectives, the Energy Marshall must:
- Review electrical designs and arc flash studies, and raise any queries or issues through the appropriate channels.
- Understand the overall project plan and timelines, and provide input on electrical activities to Project Managers.
- Build professional relationships with Project Managers, professional teams, commissioning teams, safety teams, electrical contractors, and OEMs. Balance safety and speed by helping create risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) that are practical and consider the project plan and other ongoing works.
- Conduct physical inspections to verify work quality before energization.
- Follow checklist processes for energization.
- Review and approve RAMS and method statements for electrical work before it starts.
- Inspect work closely and report safety or quality issues.
- Ensure contractors submit legal compliance documents on time, and that they are checked and uploaded correctly. Flag any concerns to the responsible GMR 2.1.
- Report all related matters to the GMR 2.1.
For the Assistant Project Manager:
- Take the lead on delegated tasks, such as reviewing non-technical method statements, supervising work in live areas, conducting health and safety site observations, executing project tasks, attending DAB meetings, logging change controls, tracking quotations and purchase orders, coordinating site cleaning and painting, handling post-IST snag lists, assisting with logistics and rigging, and performing QC inspections.
- Review and understand client standards, and ensure project deliverables meet them.
- Facilitate handovers to operations and infrastructure departments.
- Build good relationships with all stakeholders.
- Work with suppliers and subcontractors to create integrated project plans and ensure they meet quality and timeline goals.
- Identify project risks and collaborate on mitigation strategies.
- Assist with client meetings, document decisions and actions.
- Help manage project documentation, including schedules in Microsoft Project, risk registers, minutes, action plans, and email trails.
- Maintain a document repository based on project scope and risks.
- Establish and communicate project budgets and timescales.
- Handle procurement administration.
- Manage documentation according to company processes.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Data Centre Certified Professional/Practitioner is advantageous.
- Competent Electrical Artisan (Red Seal).
- Minimum N5 (preferably N6) or Diploma or BTech.
- OHVRS theory completed and/or competent MV experience preferred.
- Fair understanding of topics including environmental monitoring, generator deployment, UPS, LV/MLV, fire systems, cooling systems, biometric and CCTV security solutions, networking and switching.
- Experience in Integrated System Testing.
- Experience with Microsoft Project.
- Project Management qualification or experience.
