Purpose of the Job

A Maintenance Assistant supports the Maintenance team by providing effective equipment maintenance assistance and reliability while adhering to procedures and codes. The role aims to increase stability and maintain sustainability of equipment through proactive support activities.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities:

  • Conduct routine inspections of rotating equipment, monitoring oil temperature and vibration levels
  • Support maintenance activities including lubrication, filter changes, and basic servicing of pumps, compressors, and turbines
  • Assist with housekeeping and general maintenance tasks within the plant or workshop as required
  • Ensure inspection and maintenance records are accurately documented and maintained
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment
  • Apply safety procedures and work instructions
  • Use hand tools safely (drill, screwdriver, grinder, paint brush, portable tools)
  • Clean up work sites
  • Use two-way radios for communication during rigging tasks

  • Participate in root cause analyses and provide feedback to RCA teams
  • Carry out work according to planning
  • Participate in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments
  • Provide adequate feedback to supervisors on work progress
  • Apply and adhere to safety standards and requirements
  • Maintain good housekeeping and adhere to waste disposal procedures
  • Identify faults using applicable methods to ensure equipment availability

  • Attend training courses and seminars per training matrix to improve competency and skills

  • Perform plant inspections and repairs as required to ensure equipment reliability
  • Provide adequate feedback to customers on work progress
  • Conduct My IMS inspections to maintain and improve plant sustainability

  • Ensure correct history feedback is captured to improve renewals/upgrades and replace critical spares
  • Attend and interact in toolbox talks to improve plant safety
  • Attend and interact in PDAs and RCAs to improve plant safety and stability
  • Spot continuous improvement opportunities in own work area

Minimum Requirements

Formal Education: High School Diploma or similar

Work Experience: 0-2 years relevant working experience

  • Basic technical knowledge of rotating equipment inspection (e.g., oil temperature, vibration analysis)
  • Familiarity with pumps, compressors, and turbines required
  • Prior maintenance or related field experience is beneficial but not mandatory

Artisan Turbine Fitter – Grade 2 (Condition Monitoring)

Purpose of the Job

This Turbine Fitter position will form part of the Centralized Maintenance Function within Sasolburg and Natref Operations, reporting to the Natref Foreman. This team is responsible for condition monitoring of all rotating equipment, which includes vibration analysis, seal and temperature monitoring, as well as oil and lubrication inspection to ensure equipment reliability, early fault detection, and optimal performance.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Core Technical Responsibilities:

  • Perform regular condition monitoring inspections on all rotating equipment including vibration, temperature, and seal performance checks
  • Conduct oil and lubrication inspections, ensuring correct lubricant quality and quantity, and identify potential contamination or degradation issues
  • Record and interpret condition monitoring data to support proactive maintenance decisions
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers and maintenance planners to address abnormalities and develop corrective actions based on monitoring results
  • Ensure all monitoring data and findings are accurately logged in CMMS (SAP or equivalent system)

Minimum Requirements

Formal Education:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science or N3 with Mathematics, Science, and Language – NQF Level 4
  • Qualified as an Artisan Fitter NQF4
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s licence (MUST)

Work Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience working with rotating equipment after obtaining NQF4 artisan certification, including at least some of the following:

  • Steam Turbines
  • Centrifugal compressors (barrel and split-face type)
  • Reciprocating compressors
  • Centrifugal pumps (single and multi-stage)
  • Positive displacement pumps
  • Fans
  • Blowers
  • Gearboxes
  • Installation of mechanical seals
  • Laser alignment
  • Balancing (beneficial)
  • Fault-finding on auxiliary systems
  • Knowledge of ISO 18000 safety standards or similar
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 quality management system
