Requirements

  • A National Diploma in Civil Engineering.
  • Six years of post-qualification technical engineering experience.
  • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as an engineering technician.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Knowledge of technical design and analysis for hydrological and water resource infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of managing hydrological data.
  • Understanding of research and development principles.
  • Experience with computer-aided engineering applications.
  • Knowledge of legal compliance and project management.
  • Strong skills in writing technical reports and communicating (verbal and written).
  • Good skills in conflict management, negotiation, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Ability to work well in a team, with creativity, focus on customers, quick response, and good people and financial management skills.
  • Willingness to work away from the office and travel for long periods.

Duties

  • Manage technical services and support with engineers, technologists, and others in field, workshop, and technical hydrological activities.
  • Promote safety according to laws and regulations.
  • Review technical manuals, standard drawings, and procedures to add new technologies.
  • Ensure quality control and accuracy of hydrological time-series data.
  • Handle the registration and maintenance of hydrological data on Hydstra.
  • Oversee maintenance and operation of surface water gauging sites, including control surveys, streamflow gauging, and calibration.
  • Monitor real-time data from gauging sites and conduct site evaluations and instrumentation checks.
  • Manage administrative, human resource, and related technical tasks.
  • Contribute to budgeting, operational plans, and procurement plans.
  • Prepare and submit technical and administrative reports as needed.
  • Handle risk and disaster management for hydrological infrastructure.
  • Engage in research and development through ongoing professional training to learn new technologies and procedures.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise technical staff.
  • Conduct research and study literature to improve technical engineering skills.
  • Work with professional bodies and councils on engineering matters.
