Purpose Statement

To support the timely creation and update of South African National Standards. This includes research, working with committees, and drafting technical requirements for standards.

Minimum Requirements

Qualification

  • National Diploma or Diploma in Engineering: Electrical (Heavy Current) (NQF Level 6)

Work Experience

  • 3 years of relevant industry experience at an operational level
  • Experience in standards development at an operational level

Duties and Responsibilities

Functional Management

  • Research needs for new standards and review existing ones, following standard procedures.
  • Prepare complete proposals that explain why a national standard is needed, such as for economic, policy, regulatory, safety, or environmental reasons.
  • Share research results and suggested plans with internal and external stakeholders for feedback.
  • Stay updated on new standards or projects from international and regional bodies relevant to your work.
  • Guide junior team members when needed.
  • Handle multiple complex projects at the same time.
  • Develop new ideas or solutions.
  • Work with line management to align the standards team and technologies with the organization’s goals.
  • Lead the development of South African National Standards and related documents, following division procedures.
  • Plan and meet all deadlines for delivering standards, in consultation with line management.
  • Create draft standards with working group members based on initial plans and include technical requirements.
  • Prepare and share committee drafts according to the Rules for the Structure and Drafting of National Standards (ARP 013), ensuring agreement on the content.
  • Manage the editing of draft documents, technical reviews, and preparation of drawings or typing as needed.
  • Oversee the timely distribution of Draft South African Standards.
  • Gather and review comments received during the draft stage.
  • Follow due processes and ensure high quality in publications.
  • Provide progress reports and alert line management to any issues.
  • Register all identified projects.
  • Share the committee’s views on international documents and meeting decisions.

Risk and Compliance Management

  • Help identify and follow fraud controls, risk prevention, governance, and compliance processes.
  • Track changes in regulations and update operational controls accordingly.
  • Support internal and external audits, ISO, and accreditation needs with evidence.
  • Comply with all relevant laws, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure standards meet company policies.

Stakeholder Management

  • Identify and remove internal barriers to provide excellent customer service.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders for better communication, knowledge sharing, and reputation management.
  • Support participation in international and regional standardization committees, including membership and contributions to South Africa’s projects.
  • Take on approved leadership roles in international standards committees.
  • Offer advice and guidance to stakeholders.
  • Chair committee meetings effectively when needed.
  • Educate stakeholders on the standards development process through workshops and meetings, representing the organization professionally.
  • Participate in the organization’s committees and task teams as required.
  • Attend meetings and present performance or business information to stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support for projects when asked.
  • Build relationships with SABS clients and service providers to meet service standards.
  • Handle customer complaints promptly or escalate them as needed.
  • Analyze common issues, resolve them proactively, and share lessons learned.
