Position Purpose

To plan and execute daytime helicopter flights for transferring marine pilots and supporting port operations, ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency in line with Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) requirements.

Position Outputs

  • Plan daytime flight missions based on marine traffic demands and Port Control directives.
  • Prepare aircraft resources and loading schedules for marine pilot transfers and port-related functions.
  • Conduct preflight checks and safety briefings to meet strict safety standards.
  • Safely transfer marine pilots to vessels arriving at or departing from South African ports.
  • Comply with South African Civil Aviation Regulations.
  • Follow SAMSA regulations and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005.
  • Evacuate accident victims and people in distress.
  • Perform port-related flights according to TNPA and customer needs.
  • Determine flight routes and plan flights using approved aeronautical charts and requirements.
  • Liaise with Port Control and Air Traffic Navigation Services.
  • Record take-off and landing times to meet scheduling needs.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction and high performance.
  • Log operational flight times and assess mission efficiency.
  • Support a 24-hour seamless operation to boost port productivity, aligning with TNPA business goals and customer demands.
  • Enhance the company’s reputation by minimizing incidents and accidents through strict safety adherence.
  • Respond quickly to Port Control directives to improve ship turnaround times.
  • Train and develop Day Captains, Co-Pilots, Cadet Pilots, and related staff.
  • Receive daily operational reports from the Night Captain.
  • Conduct Line Proficiency Checks on Day Captains, Co-Pilots, and Cadet Pilots.
  • Plan flights and prepare aircraft for day operations in marine pilot services and port functions, following TNPA requirements, standard operating procedures, and policies.
  • Provide experiential training to meet national and international aviation standards for Cadet Pilots and Co-Pilots.
  • Apply Civil Aviation Regulations and the National Ports Act No. 12 of 2005.
  • Maintain uninterrupted TNPA helicopter services to deliver high-quality support, safety, and port efficiency.
  • Manage the safety of crew and passengers on board as per SACAA CARs 91.02.7, 91.02.8, and TNPA standard operating procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

A relevant aviation qualification, such as a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with helicopter rating, is required. Experience in marine pilot transfers or similar aviation operations in port environments is preferred. Matric is the minimum educational requirement.
