The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) is responsible for education, training, and skills development in the health, social development, and veterinary sectors.

HWSETA aims to achieve the following key objectives within these sectors:

  • Develop and implement the Sector Skills Plan.
  • Plan, program, and initiate skills development activities.
  • Monitor education and training programs.
  • Identify workplaces for practical work experience opportunities.
  • Support and facilitate the development of the National Skills Development Strategy.
  • Disburse levies collected from employers to fund skills initiatives.
  • Forge strong links with all stakeholders and relevant bodies.

Choosing the Right Subjects

Deciding what subjects to take at the end of Grade 9 is an important life decision. However, it can be challenging to know exactly what you want to do when you finish school. HWSETA encourages exploring options in health, social development, and related fields to build a rewarding career.

Funding Opportunities for Your Studies

Many people want to further their studies but face financial barriers. The government is working to provide greater access to funding for deserving learners who wish to continue their education.

Funds are available to support studies at public TVET colleges and universities. Bursaries target specific fields of study, while loans cover tertiary education costs with low interest rates and no need for guarantees. Importantly, parts of the loan can convert to bursaries based on academic performance, and repayment is linked to your future earnings once employed.

To qualify for an NSFAS loan, you must be a South African citizen enrolled in undergraduate studies at a public institution, with a household income below the specified threshold.
