Job Purpose

This role involves coordinating operations and applying technical knowledge of electrical network control. It includes planning personnel needs, monitoring processes, suggesting improvements to procedures, and evaluating electricity supply status. Decisions are made based on load flow management during outages or peak demand periods.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Use operations control knowledge to help review or develop shift management, resourcing, and work programming plans.
  • Mentor, coach, and evaluate staff on diagnosing and interpreting electricity network control applications. Manage the performance and conduct of shift personnel.
  • Monitor electricity supply and status of outgoing circuits at high-voltage substations using interpretive and evaluative techniques.
  • Ensure safety and continuity of supply during technical works on the electrical system or commissioning of new plant.
  • Apply knowledge of electricity distribution principles and standards to handle major network disruptions that affect essential services and major customers.
  • Investigate and communicate technical details, procedures, and performance related to the electrical network.
  • Participate in analyzing performance for modifications or new equipment introduced to the network.
  • Share technical information about supply continuity and planned outages.
  • Keep records of network control system performance and statistics, and meet specific reporting needs.

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Electrician with an apprenticeship recognized by the Department of Labour, or a Trade Test Certificate recognized by the Department of Employment and Labour.
  • NTC4 or NCV4 certificate in Electrical Engineering registered with the Department of Education.
  • Authorized High Voltage (HV) Network Controller, or authorized within the past 24 months.
  • Accredited First Aid Certificate, or obtain one within six months of appointment.
  • Valid motor vehicle driving license.
  • 5 years relevant experience in Electricity Transmission and Distribution, including at least 3 years as an Authorized High Voltage Network Controller.

Preferred Requirements

  • Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 6 years relevant experience in a Control Room environment in the electricity transmission and distribution industry.
  • This post reports to the Senior Manager (HV Network Control).
