Requirements:
- An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Nutritionist (such as a four-year bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or Nutrition). A master’s in nutrition will be an advantage.
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Dietitian or Nutritionist, including at least 3 years at a supervisory level. Knowledge of human rights principles, the health system, and supporting structures in South Africa.
- Knowledge of relevant Acts, regulations, policies, strategies, guidelines, and protocols in the Department of Health that affect nutrition outcomes. Understanding of the science of nutrition, social and commercial determinants of health, and their impact on nutrition and health results.
- Knowledge of research methods for data collection, analysis, and presentation. Familiarity with evidence-based nutrition practices to improve outcomes, strategies, guideline development and review, and principles of monitoring and evaluation.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written), analytical thinking, facilitation, teamwork, flexibility, networking, negotiation, advocacy, problem-solving, initiative, time management, and computer skills (MS Office).
Duties:
- Follow all relevant Acts, guidelines, policies, and specifications, and ensure they are implemented and integrated into practice. Manage the coordination, planning, and organization of priorities for the Integrated Nutrition Program (INP). Plan the sectional budget based on client needs and ensure availability of consumables, equipment, and staff to meet outputs and additional demands.
- Contribute to better child survival and maternal health, focusing on pregnancy, lactation, and congenital abnormalities. Manage department resources effectively, including personnel, facilities, equipment, and supplies. Support food and nutrition security interventions to address hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in vulnerable groups. Implement the South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (SAFBDG) to promote health and prevent chronic diseases.
- Plan and conduct training programs for healthcare workers. Monitor and evaluate nutrition services at facilities and community levels. Oversee Vitamin A, Zinc, Iron, and Folic acid supplementation at facilities. Participate in school health initiatives through assessments, education, and referrals.
- Provide support and supervision for nutrition activities to staff. Review, update, develop, and approve standard operating procedures (SOPs), policies, protocols, and diet sheets as needed. Evaluate food service systems at non-governmental organizations to ensure they meet nutritional, safety, sanitation, and quality standards. Monitor monthly nutrition statistics and compile reports.
- Assist in compiling and monitoring the implementation of operational and departmental plans.
