Maintenance Assistant

Purpose
The purpose of this position is to assist with engineering maintenance activities and cleaning under the instruction and oversight of the artisan or supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

Health, Safety, and Legal Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with company and client health and safety procedures and requirements.
  • Identify hazards and risks while performing daily tasks and apply control measures to ensure safe work. All tasks must include a continuous risk assessment.
  • Comply with legislative and operational requirements.
  • Follow the company and client environmental management program, along with all policies and procedures.

Functional Role

  • Assist with dismantling and re-assembling equipment as needed on site.
  • Help with installations and breakdowns of equipment under instructions from the artisan or maintenance supervisor.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties in the workshop and clean up after maintenance activities.
  • Assist with regular lubrication schedules as required by the maintenance management plan.
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces when required.
  • Conduct plant walk-downs and inspections.
  • Report all maintenance and safety risks immediately.
  • Operate mobile plant equipment to assist with offloading vehicles and replacing equipment.

Quality and Quantity Outputs

  • Achieve outputs within given guidelines.
  • Apply knowledge and experience to maintenance methods, such as proper greasing standards.
  • Reduce rework by doing tasks correctly the first time.
  • Improve the artisan’s efficiency through support and anticipating next steps.
  • Maintain over 98% compliance with schedules and routines.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Conduct plant walk-downs and inspections to report failures and issues before equipment breaks down.
  • Perform regular plant cleaning to prevent equipment failure.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 4, including relevant NATED courses (e.g., N3 Certificate).
  • Maths and Science as an advantage.
  • Valid Driver’s License, preferably code B.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience and knowledge in the industry, working with hand tools as a maintenance assistant.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and procedures.
