Main Purpose of the Job

The Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) works as a clinical assistant in emergency medical care and rescue settings. This entry-level role replaces the Basic Ambulance Assistant Course and prepares you to support Emergency Care Technicians, Practitioners, and Medical Officers in various environments.

As an ECA, you will mainly operate in and around ambulances, in places like rural areas, cities, military sites, coastal regions, corporate offices, mass events, homes, and workplaces. You will provide essential support in pre-hospital care.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Ensure operational readiness for emergency calls.
  • Administer patient care within your scope of practice.
  • Report near misses, slips, and adverse events.
  • Market and maintain a positive public image for ER24.

Required Education

Essential Education:

  • Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care

Desired Education:

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers

Required Experience

Essential Minimum Experience:

  • None

Desired Experience:

  • 1 year of operational experience as an Emergency Care Assistant

Required Job Skills and Knowledge

  • Application of best practices
  • Understanding of the EMS environment
  • English language skills (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of facilities, travel routes, and geographical areas
  • HPCSA guidelines and scope of practice
  • Patient report forms
