The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Director: Disaster Risk Assessment and Early Warning. This role is vital in supporting disaster management efforts across South Africa.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate qualification in Disaster Management, Environmental Science, or an equivalent (NQF level 7, recognized by SAQA).
  • At least 5 years of experience in Disaster Risk Management at middle or senior management level.
  • Proficiency in MS Word.
  • Completion of the Nyukela Senior Management Pre-Entry Programme before appointment.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel extensively at national and international levels.

Additional Requirements (Advantageous)

  • Proficiency in MS PowerPoint and MS Project.
  • Post-graduate qualification (NQF level 8) in Geographic Information Systems, Geoinformatics, computer science with GIS modules, or environmental science with GIS specialization.
  • Registration with a professional body for GIS or a certificate in GIS.

  • Awareness of government IT/IS standards, procedures, practices, and SITA policies.
  • Project management methodology.
  • Knowledge of the Geomatics Act.

Duties

  • Generate and maintain a national indicative disaster risk profile.
  • Develop and implement disaster management early warning systems, and disseminate warnings to vulnerable communities.
  • Establish and maintain geographic information management systems for disaster risk management, including appropriate spatial information.
  • Gather information on all aspects of disaster management and share it with stakeholders and vulnerable communities.
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with disaster management spatial information requirements.
