SANBI seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and professional individual to lead and manage a section of the zoo. This section includes specific animal groups, following best practices for animal husbandry and welfare.
The role requires a degree in Zoology, Nature Conservation, Game Ranch Management, Animal Health, or an equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A relevant postgraduate degree or equivalent at NQF 8 is an advantage. Candidates need 6 years of relevant work experience, including 3 years in a supervisory role.
Key competencies include:
- Advanced knowledge of animal welfare, care, and ethical needs for the relevant species.
- Deep understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation strategies.
- Strong knowledge of laws related to biodiversity conservation, finance, project management, procurement, human resources, and ethical governance.
- Good grasp of World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation and Animal Welfare Strategies.
- Familiarity with South African National Standards for Zoo and Aquarium Practice.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety.
- Ability to work in diverse teams under pressure, focusing on quality, cost, and safety.
- Strong planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, plus interpersonal skills.
Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license with at least one year of practical experience. A valid Class V (or higher) Commercial Dive qualification is an advantage. If not qualified, candidates must agree to obtain it within 12 months of starting. Excellent swimming skills are required, and candidates must be willing to train as a Commercial Dive Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop an engaging animal collection that highlights conservation and boosts public awareness and visitor experience.
- Support strategic plans for the Animal Collection and Conservation directorate and the National Zoological Garden.
- Enhance the National Zoological Garden’s role in wildlife conservation by promoting sustainable biodiversity management and leading welfare practices for ex-situ wildlife.
- Oversee operations such as planning and implementing activities, managing animal husbandry and welfare, handling section projects, coordinating animal captures, contributing to infrastructure, administration, reporting, and public engagement.
- Build professional skills in the zoo industry and mentor the next generation through training.
- Lead a team, managing performance, relations, and attendance.
- Ensure governance, risk, and compliance through budget management, asset and equipment oversight, health and safety, and operational continuity for the section.
