Library Assistant

Basic Salary: R206 440.08 – R267 989.40

Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric/Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) Certificate.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a library environment.

Knowledge:

  • Good communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Politeness, patience, attention to detail, and time management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain records of users who have failed to return overdue books (defaulters). Receipt and reconcile payments made for copies, penalties, and bookings for onward submission. Record daily issue statistics and submit to the Librarian.
  • Ensure that administrative procedures and reporting requirements are complied with in respect of library activities.
  • Conduct outreach programs, educating patrons on library procedures.
  • Create and set up displays of new books and dispose of old books. Control the booking and utilization of the activities room for students and community groups. Make available and alert users to specific conditions. Attend regular book exchanges by visiting the KZN Library book depot.
  • Communicate with new and existing users, establishing the nature of their enquiries. Maintain the computer database of users’ details. Attend to special requests for specific library material. Perform subject indexing of newspapers and magazines. Shelve books according to allocations. Conduct stock counts at the library. Arrange for book repairs, replacements, and covering from time to time.
